Menston in Bloom

The broad aim of Menston in Bloom is to make Menston  a nice place to live. It's not just about flowers! Other core elements include cleanliness and tackling issues of litter, graffiti, vandalism and anti-social behaviour.

Britain in Bloom is a national campaign, organised by the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society), that encourages communities of all sizes to make positive and lasting improvements to their local areas for the benefit of local people. The campaign is the largest of its kind in Europe and incorporates floral features, permanent planting, wildflower meadows, planting for nature, fruit and vegetable gardening and much more.

In 2007 Menston in Bloom was awarded Silver Guilt Menston in only it's second year of participation.  Menston in Bloom is an active group of volunteers who meet once a month during the season to discuss projects and arrange planting days etc.  Any help or ideas are very gratefully received.

The Railway Garden on Station Road has been planted and the hedge has been laid. We think our efforts are starting to show and it should look great in the Spring.

In 2008 we are planning to create a Tree Trail Guide.  We need your help with this.  What we are looking for is anything interesting about trees in the village… Old trees, tall trees, historic trees, memorial trees, trees with a story, etc.  Please tell us what you know about our trees…For example - Does anyone know how old the Chestnut tree in Miss Porritt's field is? - We want the Tree Trail Guide to be interesting and educational - showing the features of different species of tree in each season…Any thoughts or help with this will be most welcome.

Menston in Bloom meets on the third Wednesday of the month at the Methodist Church Hall at 19.30. Please come along or phone Rosemary or Quentin Mackenzie with ideas on trees etc. on 876625.

Notices of meetings are posted in the Library and on the notice board outside Kirklands.
