Help to save Kirklands for village use!

10/04/2017

By April of next year Bradford Council intends to transfer to the community the Kirklands Community Centre, its associated buildings and land. Our failure to pick up this opportunity will almost certainly mean its closure.

This much used centre is a vital beating heart of our village life and with effort it could probably provide a cheaper and better service if its stewardship was free of Council bureaucracy and enjoyed the breath of local enterprise and the ability to raise funds through grants and gifts not available to the Council. If the village is to retain its ambience and environment in the coming years Menston must seize this opportunity.

On behalf of the Menston Parish Council Peter Finlay, Quentin Mackenzie and Dale Smith are inviting volunteers to join a working party to draw up proposals for a wider consultation.

It seems that the issue divides into two parts:

1. The building and estate - its condition, repairs and maintenance - The building needs significant investment over the short, medium and long term. Transference is likely to be best achieved via a long lease and a “Charitable Vehicle/Community Interest Company”, the exact type of which is yet to be identified.

2. The use on a daily basis by its customers - Ideally year on year this should create a sensible surplus to sustain its future.

We have some detailed figures which briefly are:

The building and estate - its condition, repairs and maintenance; based on a 100+ page Council Building Condition Report (and which would benefit from expert and detailed scrutiny):

The figures (rounded) are:
