Proposed Wharfedale Greenway

A major public consultation took place in June 2014 regarding a proposed walking and cycling route of some 5 miles in length between Burley and Pool, linking Otley and Menston. The results of the consultation have now been published.

The main points of the Executive Summary document are as follows:

Most people would use it for leisure, but it would also be valuable for shopping trips, commuting and even getting to school.

Most people were split between using the Greenway for walking or cycling, although 5% of respondents would use either a wheelchair or a horse.

The benefits of using the Greenway were seen as increased safety, improved health and an alternative to using a car.

Some general concerns were raised, including possible loss of privacy  for adjacent properties, impact on the local environment and possible dangers where the route crosses roads.

As regards the link of Menston to the Greenway, the shortest route was, by a narrow margin, preferred to the more direct link to Burley. It was recognised, however, that both routes had issues and alternative options should be explored.

This Executive Summary document will now be used as a starting point, illustrating public support for the route, enabling more detailed work to be carried out and to move the project forward.

The Executive Summary document is available to read here.

Please note that the appendices, containing details of all comments, are not available.
